Giveaway, worldwide: win a cookbook of your choice
Update: Congrats to Aaron, who requested The Edible Atlas: Around the World in Thirty Nine Cuisines. The book looks fascinating, it’s another I’ve added to the list.
I cannot tell you how many times I have seen an amazing blog giveaway, and then was bummed that it was only available in the US, or US & Canada if someone was being generous. So I was determined to have a giveaway that was available to you no matter where you live, to say thanks.
And the Book Depository makes that really easy. Even though a certain other company seems to have the majority share on the online book market, it isn’t based in the country where I live, and the shipping cost of a book can be horrendous.
The Book Depository, on the other hand, includes the price of shipping in the price of the book, to 90 countries in the world. You don’t have to try to reach the maximum of a shipping weight category or ship to a friend to mail it to you, or think you’ve found a cheap book but get blindsided by shipping costs. Nope, the price that is quoted is the price that will get it to your door, almost wherever you live.
I know that ebook are popular and don’t take up paper resources or have shipping costs, but there is something I love about holding a real hard copy book in my hands. Maybe I’m old fashioned and nostalgic, but reading an ebook just doesn’t have the same satisfaction as reading a book that has pages.
And there are so many amazing cookbooks out there, full of nourishing recipes and beautiful photography. Some of the cookbooks on my radar include:
The Nourished Kitchen, by Jennifer McGruther: Jenny’s blog of the same name is full of traditional, nourishing recipes, and gorgeous photographs. Her cookbook beautifully celebrates the process of farm to table.
Wild Fermentation, by Sandor Ellix Katz: I’m pretty convinced that fermented foods belong to the solution for a number of health issues. I wrote about some of the ways probiotics are good for us, and fermented foods are a tasty, cheap, and guaranteed way to consume some of those necessary bacteria. Many consider this book to be the best start to fermenting.
Ladled: Nourishing Soups for All Seasons, by Kimberly Harris: It’s getting chilly for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, and it’s the perfect time for hot bowls of soup. Kimi runs The Nourishing Gourmet blog, where she inspires with her gentle writing and accessible but healthy recipes.
Japanese Farm Food, by Nancy Singleton Hachisu: I’m fascinated by the author’s story, partly because of my own heritage. More to the point, the recipes look interesting, delicious, and fresh.
Heal Your Gut Cookbook, by Hilary Boynton and Mary G. Brackett: This cookbook breaks down the overwhelming GAPS diet into a multitude of stages with recipes for each stage, for a regiment that is rather hard to cook for. Add lovely photos, and this is one cookbook that I’ll want should I try GAPS again.
Preserving Wild Foods, by Matthew Weingarten and Raquel Pelzel: This cookbook combines two loves of mine, wild food and preserving. I love the idea of using the bounty around us (like dandelions!) to nourish ourselves.
I could go on, there are so many creative and beautiful cookbooks out there. What cookbooks are on your radar?
Go to The Book Depository and browse to see if they have any cookbook you would like (up to 30 euros/38 USD worth). Choose any you like, the ones I listed are just examples.
If you live outside the 90 countries with free shipping included, I’ll add the difference to ship it to you anyway.
This giveaway is sponsored by myself, on my own. I am an affiliate of The Book Depository, so if you buy any books through them I will get a small percentage, though it costs you the same.

Thanks for the chance to win. I hadn’t heard of The Book Depository. It’s nice to know about it. There’s actually a cookbook I’ve been wanting to get, but haven’t taken the leap. It’s Heal Your Gut. The idea of trying GAPS has seemed overwhelming. This book should help me get over it. My favorite recipe on your blog was the Liver Pate, for two reasons. One, it was easy and delicious! and Two, it was what led me to your blog. I’ve enjoyed learning more about Slovakia, and also the recipes since. Oh, and I’ve subscribed, so that’s 8 for 8 chances! 🙂

Did you actually make the Liver Pate? I’m so pleased you liked it! The allspice is great, yes? Heal Your Gut looks amazing.

Oct 25, 2014 @ 12:04:40
I did make it, and yes, the allspice really brings it alive! It made a lot for one person, but I divided it into 4 containers, froze 3 and kept 1 in the refrigerator. Thanks so much for answering my questions about it on that page. The fact that it could be frozen was what allowed me to make it. I did put the puree through a fine sieve after all the other steps. It removed any small bits of gristle and I was left with a smooth flavorful spread! Yum!

I just recently discovered your two blogs and have signed up for each of them. I would choose the Heal Your Gut cookbook for sure! I found you while looking for roasted pumpkin seed recipes. I have also ordered from the book depository over the years. Great source for books!

Thank Jennifer! I only have one blog though…and I don’t think I have any roasted pumpkin seeds on it. 🙂 Great choice!

So many great choices! I would have to start with “Wild Fermentation” from your list, but I think I will put the “Perinneal vegetable garden” book and DVD on my Christmas list! Thank you for your blog. I am so excited to ferment some red onions. I hope I like them as much as I do pickled onions! Have you ever fermented garlic on its own, not just as part of a vegetable blend?
Naomi
Oct 24, 2014 @ 15:30:45
Yes, but I didn’t manage to leave it long enough to mellow. It takes quite a while for that, at least a month I think.

Great contest Naomi! I’m curious about the preserving wild foods book. I love the idea of using the “food” around us, though I must admit i’m a bit hesitant to eat the dandelions in my lawn. 🙂 Maybe next year, when the dandelions are ripe for picking, I’ll revisit your blog and find the dandelion salad recipe you posted (at least I think it was a salad…). Keep up the fantastic work on the blog!! 🙂
Naomi

I’ve been enjoying your blog though haven’t had the courage to prepare many of your recipes, especially because I am afraid that no one would eat it… Oh well… But winning a book sounds good. Ladled looks like the one I’d use most often although I would love to learn more about foods from the Nourished Kitchen. Well, I’d give it a try. Something new and healthier in my kitchen would be good.

Hi!
I´ve never heard about bookdepository before! Thank you! I will for sure order from them!
My favorite one would be Wild Fermantation, (http://www.bookdepository.com/Wild-Fermentation-Sandor-Ellix-Katz/9781931498234/?a_aid=almostbananas) , since I´m recently started to eat healthier due to MSdiagnosis and being medicated with something that my body is telling me it don´t want. I have been afraid to ferment anything since I don´t know enough to do it safely so this would be a great start for me!
I´ve never been to Slovakia so I love seeing the pictures! My favorite is the Rohac from this year. So beautiful!
Since I´m a huuuuuuuge christmasfan I am going to buy ingridients for the Simple Pumpkin Gingerbread Smothie! I have two homegrown (or allottmentgrown) pumpkins left that I didn´t know what they would like to become and now I know!
I´ve subscried and are looking forward for new recipes! Thank you 🙂
Naomi
Nov 03, 2014 @ 11:15:04
Sorry about the MS diagnosis. Starting to ferment can seem overwhelming, but it’s much easier than it seems. Hopefully in the next while I’ll have a post about fermenting for beginners.
Glad you like the photos of Slovakia. It’s a little country with lots of gems.
The pumpkin gingerbread smoothie is sooooo good, hope you enjoy!

Hi Naomi, this is such a generous giveaway! Thank you so much for the opportunity! I’m new to your blog, and think that your life in Slovakia sounds so fascinating and different to what I’m familiar with. I do love the Asian touch you bring to your site.
There is a book that I’ve had on my wish list ‘The Gluten-Free Asian Kitchen’, by Laura Byrne Russell. I’m trying to recreate dumplings and steamed buns, that are gluten-free, without success! I also fancy the food you suggested, ‘Preserving Wild Foods’.
